Thoughts from IRCE: The Shift to AI

A month ago, we unveiled our rebrand, Cortex + ReSci; two weeks ago, we took our newly revamped show on the road to the Internet Retailer Conference + Exhibition (IRCE) in Chicago, welcoming conference attendees who came to our booth to learn about predictive marketing technology.

At IRCE, it became clear that the current trends related to custom analytics, data, and automation are taking on a new driving force: artificial intelligence. Here are a few things to consider in understanding AI and its future in marketing technology.

How AI Is Changing the Industry

It’s no longer disputed that understanding customer data is key to building better experiences, and that these better experiences build loyalty (and sales). It’s vital for brands to use this information to engage customers, and as the ever-crowded-and-growing landscape of MarTech indicates, it’s a concept that’s becoming more and more popular.

Practical applications of artificial intelligence is an equally hot concept: experts estimate that by the year 2020, AI will be a 70 billion-dollar industry. In a way, it was inevitable for the two industries to converge, especially as automation in marketing gains traction. After all, AI is the next generation of automation — action driven by deep machine intelligence.

In the same way, AI is the next logical step in marketing technology, which was already apparent at IRCE!

How Marketers Can Prepare

Be open to it.

AI in marketing is still developing, but the best (and most fundamental) advice to marketers is to be open to it. It’s important to stay current with new developments; now is a good opportunity for you to get ahead of the curve.  Doing so will better equip you when it comes time to integrate the technology into your marketing strategies. And don’t worry about machines “taking over” — today’s AI tech is here to help, not replace.

Start thinking big.

It’s important to ask how AI technology will influence your overall strategy.  With AI capable of totally automating (and therefore simplifying) 1:1 personalization, marketers are free to push creative boundaries in creating unique brand experiences.  AI technology does the tedious work for you, so you can focus on the big picture; make sure to take advantage.
